Chain Bridge Renovation

An alternative route for the Pest and Buda tour

The renovation of the Chain Bridge started this spring. The iconic bridge was last renovated in 1986-1988. Now the Chain Bridge will be renewed fundamentally: the sidewalks and the roadway will be completely demolished and rebuilt. It will not be possible to walk across the bridge until 2023, so I had to modify the route of the Pest and Buda tour.

The SzĂ©chenyi Chain Bridge is Hungary’s oldest bridge across the Danube, and it’s a landmark of the capital. The 375 meters long bridge was designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark. Its construction started in 1840 and finished in 1849. The bridge was blown up during the last days of WW II, and it was reopened in 1949. Crossing it was a highlight of Budapest walking tours, but hopefully, the new route will be as popular as the classic one.
